Q What female, five foot nothing, has 16 year's riding experience and a VFR?
A
Ginny Richley, advanced instructor and owner of GRS Training.
"Top of the world, ma. That's how I felt when things really started to come together on my advanced riding course.
"I passed my test a
year and a half ago and, although I've really enjoyed my riding, I've felt at times that my enthusiasm surpassed my talent. Result: badly-judged and badly-fudged kecks, which consequently affected my confidence. So much so that I was even
worried about being good enough to attend advanced training.
"Finding out about Ginny at GRS convinced me to go for it. The fact that she was a women - a small women at that - meant that she'd understand all my problems
concerning manoeuvring big bikes. I reckoned she'd be sympathetic. And so she was, but in a positive 'If I can do it, so can you' kind of way.
"What really struck home was that I carried a lot of unhelpful baggage from my test
training, mixed up with received wisdom passed on from more experienced friends and colleagues.
"The course emphasised smooth, confident, safe riding. The was a lot of time spent concentrating on overtaking opportunities, and
generally making brisk, safe progress. I learned that positioning was vital - that positioning and the correct choice of gear were vital to smooth riding - and a good night out (or in).
"Our day-long course was broken up at
regular intervals, and Ginny praised progress while gently encouraging 'other ways' to improve weaker aspects of my riding.
"It was like receiving helpful advice from a friend, rather than formal instruction. Ginny is very
knowledgeable, infinitely patient and has the ability to inspire confindence in even the most unsure and nervous of riders (me).
"After the course I was furnished with a full written report on the day's teachings. My
improvement was tangible and considerable - I leaned the bike further than ever before, felt more confident than ever before, and my bike seemed to eat the road in hungry, grateful gulps. I still wouldn't class myself as woman and machine
fused together in perfect harmony, but at least now we're both trying to do the same thing. Thanks, Ginny!"
